So, it has been quite a lot of time since I last had my pizza blog. I enjoyed it very much, but unfortunately, I just didn't commit the time and effort into keeping it up to date. After seeing all the support for the blog and pizza news I realized that there were more people than I anticipated who enjoyed reading about pizza! Well, I am going to give this another go, starting with: Jet's Pizza!
Jet's Pizza was founded in 1978 in a suburb of Detroit called Sterling Heights. Operating primarily in the state of Michigan, Jets has since expanded to operate in 18 other states. The first store, 'Jett's Party Shoppe & Pizzeria' was opened by founding brothers' Eugene and John Jetts and was originally a vacant party store. By 1992, the brothers' two cousins Jim Galloway Jr. and Jeff Galloway had joined together to form Jet's America Inc. and expanded their pizza empire. The first franchise store opened in 1990 and as of October 2020 has grown to over 390 franchises. Known for their Detroit-style, square deep dish pizza, Jet's boasts their original recipe came from their mother and has not changed since 1978. Jet's Pizza makes some bold claims about their 'za and I am here to tell you how those claims stack up. Now I'll get into what all Jet's has to offer later, but for the purposes of this review I ordered a large NY-Style Round pizza, with pepperoni and bacon (sauce and cheese were the default options). I also added their Special Crust flavor: Turbo Crust®. This is a combination of butter, garlic, and romano cheese. Now, I know you're wondering why I didn't try their special Detroit-style deep dish pizza, well its because I didn't want to so there. Actually I had only ever had Jet's deep dish prior to this order and I wanted to try something new! I think it's difficult to compare different styles of pizza so I will review their Detroit-style soon enough.
"Better, because it has to be."
Jet's claims they value fresh ingredients and are committed to quality. After eating my slices, I can't disagree with that. Over all I really enjoyed their pizza. The TL:DR, 7 out of 10. Lets break it down via my main categories: Crust, Sauce, Cheese, Toppings.
The crust of the pizza was cooked well for a chain pizza place. Obviously it's no coal fired oven, but it was sill really good. I think the only downside was it's thinness. I know I said I enjoy thin-crust pizza more, however I know what Jet's deep dish crust tastes like, and I missed that crust flavor here. I have had thin crust pizza that manages to retain great flavor so I know I'm not being too demanding. That being said, it wasn't bad by any means just didn't bring much flavor to the party. The crust itself, 5/10. I want to hit on the Turbo Crust here, as I think it was fantastic. It added some much needed flavor to the crust especially on those last bites when its just you and the crust. Many people don't eat pizza crust, Turbo Crust would change that for you I promise. It tasted more like a seasoned bread stick and was a nice way to end the slightly greasy meal.
I combined these categories for one specific reason: they really combined and complemented each other. I have positives and negatives here. The sauce itself was really good, although the robust tomato and herb flavor you crave when eating a pizza sort of disappeared. I think it got lost a little with the cheese. The cheese itself was really good. It melted perfectly together forming a nice solid layer of cheese. The kind where you have to bite through with your teeth and gives a nice chew when you eat it. While I give the sauce a 5/10, the cheese would be 7/10.
Like I said earlier, I ordered pepperoni and bacon. Jet's toppings were on point. The pepperoni got nice and crispy around the edges and had a nice bite to them. The bacon bits were perfect. They imparted a nice smokey pork flavor that really complemented the rest of the slice in it's entirety. The pizza itself also remained only slightly greasy. Obviously pizza will have grease, but I didn't feel inclined to wick away extra grease with a paper towel. The main toppings, 9/10 easy.
This is a very important factor I think. For those of us who can't eat a whole pizza in one sitting (idk who those people are, but oh well) how did it taste the next day, straight outta the fridge? Great. I almost liked it better this way I won't lie. The sauce and the cheese had melded together again but in a way that helped to highlight the sauce a little more. The bacon was still king of the taste buds though as each bite was filled with that cool smokey flavor. 7.5/10.
I could keep talking about Jet's for a long time, which is good! Their menu offers tons of options including Gluten-free and Cauliflower crusts, as well as several options for my herbivore friends. Great selection of salads and possibly the worlds best ranch dressing (I am told from my wife) which you can buy by the bottle! Jet's offers great pizza very easily competing with similar fast food pizza chains like PizzaHut and Dominos. While I think there can be some improvement, I am still very eager to try the other specials Jet's has to offer including their Deep-dish Detroit-Style pizza.
